The starter battery (also known as a the 12 V battery) stores the energy generated by the alternator and supplies current to important systems such as control units and comfort functions (e.g. seat heating). It also supplies energy when the engine is switched off and protects electronic components from voltage peaks. Failure of the battery often leads to the total failure of the vehicle, regardless of whether it has a combustion or electric drive. According to the ADAC, the battery has been the most common cause of breakdowns in Germany for years, accounting for over 40% of all breakdown reports.
