In hydrogen fuel cell technology, an electrochemical reaction takes place in the fuel cell between the gaseous hydrogen from the pressure tanks and the oxygen from the compressed ambient air. The electrons exchanged during the reaction form the electrical energy for the drive. For the high efficiency of the drive, an even supply of both media and coolant to the membrane in the fuel cell as well as humidity control are crucial. In addition to technological analogies to the combustion engine such as charge air coolers, air filters, control units and a sensor system, the BMW Group has also developed specific hydrogen components for the new fuel cell system in the BMW iX5 Hydrogen. This includes, for example, the high-revving air compressor with a turbine or a high-voltage coolant pump.
