Why does my MINI react differently when I use the Digital Key Plus with a smartwatch compared to a smartphone?

When using a compatible Apple Watch or Google smartwatch as a MINI Digital Key Plus, the behaviour might differ slightly from that of a compatible smartphone in certain situations. This is due to technical differences such as the design, device architecture, antenna design, battery capacity and transmitting power of the smartwatch, which might be lower than those of a smartphone.

The following steps may often prove useful if the vehicle does not immediately respond to the Digital Key Plus:

  • Please wait a moment – about 5 seconds.
  • Take a step back from the vehicle and carry out the action again.
  • For opening, use the hand of your arm which you are not wearing a smartwatch on.
  • Check the state of charge of your smartwatch.
  • Hold the smartwatch display directly against the door handle to use Near Field Communication (NFC) access.


Please note: The MINI Digital Key Plus for smartwatches is available for MINI vehicles with MINI Operating System 9. Support for Apple Watches and selected Google Wear OS smartwatches, as well as individual functions, may vary depending on the vehicle model, software version and smartwatch model.
