The "Near Field Communication" (NFC) mobile standard of your MINI Digital Key Plus guarantees you access to your MINI with Operating System 9 as a backup functionality should the unlocking system not be active when approaching or not work temporarily.
To unlock, hold your smartphone or smartwatch to the door handle on the driver's side. Use the same action to lock your MINI again. It may take several seconds for the vehicle to detect the digital key. Place the device in the smartphone tray to start the engine. After starting the engine, the device can be removed from the tray.
As the exact procedure may differ slightly between the end devices, please note the following information:
- On Apple iPhones, the NFC aerial is usually located in the upper third. Therefore, hold this end at an angle against the door handle. On Android devices, the aerial is usually positioned more in the centre, so that holding the rear side of the device parallel to the door handle is ideal. Move the device slowly back and forth to find the best position.

Depending on the setting and state of charge, the device may also need to be unlocked in order to use the NFC function. This applies both to locking and unlocking at the door handle and to starting the engine in the smartphone tray. Apple devices often also require a double click on the side button. Follow the instructions on the display of your device shortly after holding it to the door handle or placing it in the tray.
